I was excited to race this past weekend in Bush, Louisiana!  It is always fun to compete alongside my Sister Chain teammates.  I had heard good things about Crawfishman Triathlon and its history, and one of the guys on the men’s team was even sporting his Crawfishman t-shirt from when he competed in 1987!!

For one thing, the swim takes place in a lake, and that means one important thing to me- I don’t have to worry about sharks.  I’m not going to lie- alligators did cross my mind as we passed an Alligator Airboat Tour sign just a few miles from the race course. We pulled up to the course just as they were announcing water temp- 84.1. Definitely not wetsuit legal which was fine with me! The race location is really pretty- the lake was calm and a nice temp for swimming our 1000 yard swim.

PictureA perfect swim venue!
After a rolling start, we settled into a smooth swim. I liked that I never felt like I was surrounded by a tremendous amount of people and I could settle in to a nice steady rhythm. (Even if my time doesn’t reflect that) ;)

Now on to the bike! The 18 mile course had rolling hills pretty much throughout with a few turns. It was nicely marked, and the only real vehicle traffic I encountered was at the turnaround point. The volunteers were quick to stop the vehicles and give bikes right of way. Being an out and back course, it was cool to be able to see team members along the way and cheer each other on.

Now on to the run. Race directors noted multiple times in describing the course that it was hilly. AND they weren’t kidding. Another out and back course, the run was challenging as temps had started to climb. Although it was hilly, there were extended portions in the shade, and I always mentally tell myself if there is an uphill, there is also a downhill!!!  So I made the most of the downhills and actually enjoyed the run course. It is downhill to the finish which is awesome, and we had our teammates Mary and Mindi cheering us all the way in.

We had entered the team competition, and we ended up winning which was so fun!! Teammate Katya won female overall and Cicely was 3rdoverall! (So cool!) Candice won her age group, I placed first in my age group and Amy took 3rd. Mindi also completed the swim and bike portion of the course. Overall, it was a fantastic day for our team!

I also thought the awards were really awesome!

The alarm goes off at 3am and I am ready to roll out of bed on a Sunday morning. It’s RACE DAY for the Pensacola Triathlon. I chow down on some eggs and waffles then throw the gear in the car. For the drive over I brew extra strong coffee and have an iced tea to amp me up.  I blasted to one of my favorite Pearl Jam concerts enroute - ready to pump me up for the race. When I arrived at the race site I am excited - the water is calm and the weather is perfect!

I grab my gear, bike and music.  This time I put my My Morning Jacket on the playlist as I head to transition. During my pre-race warm up I catch glimpse of the moon shining over the bay, no better way too calm my pre-race “jitters”. This race has an early start of 6:15am and as the sun starts to rise I head on down to the swim start.  it’s self seeding with men going first and wetsuit legal.  The swim was awesome, water temps were just right and you could hear the crowd cheer you on along the sea Wall. I hop out of the water and see my teammate Christine is ahead of me, she yells out some motivation as I approach T1.

A quick transition and I am off on the bike with a cool ride up Scenic highway and fabulous views of the bay.  There is one pretty good climb up Langley Avenue.  The course is an out and back going through downtown and Northeast Pensacola.  There are some some turns throughout the course, but it was well marked. Anytime I can ride without a lot wind I am a happy girl, so it was a good bike day!

Back at T2 and my time could have been a little better there..... my legs are feeling it from the ride. But here we go!  The run course is two loops through Downtown Pensacola and it was flat and fun. I appreciate the words encouragement from spectators, volunteers, and other racers throughout the course.

As I run towards the finish of my 2nd loop I hear “Born to Run” By Springsteen on the speakers and I have to smile. Not only did I finish strong on my run, but I crossed the finish line with a song from The Boss! A pretty epic way to finish.  Overall, it was a good day, I was 3rd Overall Female and pleased with my day.  You never know what you will get on race day.  The Pensacola Triathlon had the perfect race conditions, great weather, good course, and a nice after party.

Thanks to all our team sponsors for making 2018 possible - I am proud to be a part of the SISTER CHAIN TRI TEAM!
