Double Bridge Run 2017

2/4/2017

The Women’s Gulf Coast Tri Team has officially started their inaugural 2017 season with an annual Gulf Coast road race in Pensacola, FL.  This year was the 20th Anniversary of the Double Bridge Run 15K (DBR) which brings athletes from all over the country to enjoy this point-to-point course beginning in downtown Pensacola and finishing on Pensacola Beach.  As the name indicates, athletes cross two bridges:  the first being the Pensacola Bay Bridge, best known as the “three mile bridge” and then the Bob Sikes Bridge, often referred to as the “beach bridge.”  What many forget is the additional “hill” which is a sloping overpass at about mile 7 as athletes approach the beach bridge, often leaving athletes wondering “that was the second bridge, where is the finish?”

A cold front came whisking through over the night, the low 40F temperatures made for many pre-race layers and a thousands of shivering athletes toeing the start line.  Naturally, athletes started to warm up as the NNE wind swiftly pushed them over the bridges and towards the finish line at the beach.

This 15K race is an event of all-comers, roughly 2,700 of them.  Ranging from top-notch athletes finishing with amazing times to first-timers aiming to be adorned with a finisher’s medal.  Zarzaur Law, a loyal sponsor of the race congratulated all the 15K athletes with a custom event visor or trucker cap – great swag to cherish the memory of the 15K run.  The afterparty and awards ceremony never disappoints; plenty of goodies, beverages, and camaraderie for the athletes, spectators, and volunteers.

WGCTT brought three athletes to the DBR – Liz Meraz-Valdez and Cicely Wallis as first-timers to this event and Mindi Straw as a veteran of the event.  In all, WGCTT had a great time on the race course and celebrating the start of 2017!

Liz Meraz-Valdez (1:05:42 – 5th AG 35-39 AG)
Cicely Wallis (1:10:58 – 8th AG 30-34 AG)
Mindi Straw (1:17:23 – 9th AG 45-49 AG)

Thanks to Pensacola Sports for another well-run, safe, and unique event!

WGCTT looks forward to starting our triathlon season – look for us sporting the pink, blue, and green team kits!
